Barthes was a narrative theorist and was interested in narrative concepts that occur between the institution and the audience. He debated that the reader produces new meanings when reading a text, making use of previous experience as well as the text its self. So for example when watching the a docusoap about an airline, individuals meaning depending as much on their own experiences of the airlines and docusoaps as on the text its self.
