Rolande Barthes

Barthes was a narrative theorist and was interested in narrative concepts that occur between the institution and the audience. He debated that the reader produces new meanings when reading a text, making use of previous experience as well as the text its self. So for example when watching the a docusoap about an airline, individuals meaning depending as much on their own experiences of the airlines and docusoaps as on the text its self. The most well known of barthes codes is probably the enigma code, In its most Basic form, it is the hook or the mystery to be resolved for the audience, e.g. in serials which make use of the old come back next week to find out what happens technique, or in trailers for new films.

An example of an enigma film trailer would be Cloverfield (Shown Below)
